EXPERIENCE
Stephen has over ten years of experience helping his clients protect their intellectual property in the United States and internationally. He has prepared numerous patent and trademark applications and prosecuted these applications to issuance. Moreover, Stephen has a wealth of experience counseling clients on short and long term patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret strategies. Stephen conducts and oversees patent and trademark searches, and provides opinions on the patentability and freedom to practice of inventions, as well as the likelihood of registration of trademarks and service marks. He has managed large and diverse patent and trademark portfolios for large corporations, as well as individual inventors and small to medium-sized businesses. Stephen has experience in many areas of technology, and has prepared patent applications for inventions in such diverse fields as chemical, mechanical, electrical, computer software and internet-related business methods. He has a particular interest in helping clients with green inventions.

Scherrer Patent & Trademark Law, P.C. is located in Crystal Lake, Illinois, but services clients locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. Stephen is registered to practice law in Illinois and he is a registered patent attorney with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (Reg. No. 45,080). Thus, he is able to represent clients from any location at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. In addition, Stephen routinely travels to visit his clients both for convenience for the client and to reduce the burden for inventors who may have large amounts of information and material, such as prototypes of their invention, that may be difficult to transport.

Stephen completed his Juris Doctor and Master of Science in Environmental Science with an emphasis on environmental chemistry from Indiana University in 1998. While at Indiana University, Stephen actively participated in the Environmental Law Society and was a Managing Editor of the Federal Communications Law Journal.
1994, B.S. in Chemistry, Illinois Benedictine College (now Benedictine University), Lisle, Illinois
Stephen graduated from Illinois Benedictine College (now Benedictine University) in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. While at Benedictine, Stephen studied organic chemistry under Dr. David Rausch and performed research for Amoco Corporation on synthesizing, identifying and minimizing byproducts of complex organic synthesis reactions. Stephen also graduated as a Benedictine Scholar, a program for academically gifted students designed to enhance the academic progress and leadership qualities of its members. In addition, while at Benedictine, Stephen played soccer, participated in the theater department as an actor and stage manager, played piano, studied German, and wrote articles for and edited the student newspaper, The Candor.
COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES AND INTERESTS
- Co-founder and board member of Carry On, Inc., a charity created to raise money to fight pediatric cancer by staging the Kicks 4 Cancer 3v3 Charity Soccer Tournament each summer in Schaumburg, Illinois.
- Active at Resurrection Catholic Church in Woodstock, Illinois as a lector, singer and pianist in the Music Ministry, website committee and kindergarten religious educator.
- Co-den leader for Cub Scout Wolf Den 5, Pack 347, Blackhawk Counsel, Northern Illinois.
- Hobbies include reading, playing piano, and home theater, including summer backyard movie nights.
